WorldSkills goes Junior High!
The skills demonstrations were designed to mirror the competitions from the World Skills, but without the competitive aspect. Instead, the students presented their productions as a skills showcase. Included in the event were samples of cooking, photography, woodworking, robotics, fashion clothing, web page design, and video production.
The coordinator of the event, Brandy Yee, requested judges for the event from SAIT, as we are the partner in the World Skills Competition coming up in September. SAIT instructors responded with keen interest, and 13 of the total of 22 judges came from SAIT.
Derrick MacAskill
Jeff Pugh
John Rhyno
Robert White
Simon Dunn
Ian Cowley
Deanna Burgart
Kendell Anquist
Wes Hanzuk
Mike Irvine
Brent McNeil
Leen Kranenburg
Shane McQueen
Students were judged according to the quality of the showpiece piece created; the skills used in its creation; and the ability of the student to articulate what they have done, what skills they have acquired, what they have learned, and their reflections on what they may do differently next time. There were no prizes awarded, as the showcase was a celebration of learning, but the students had a wonderful time, as did the judges.
It was inspiring to see such talent, dedication, and enthusiasm in such young students – we hope to see them here at SAIT in six years or so!

Petro-Canada Verenex Libya arrives!
This morning we held a breakfast for the students to meet the SAIT staff members and representatives from both Petro-Canada and Verenex that they will be working with during their stay.
The students will be here for ten months, starting their Canadian education with English language training, and then receiving Production Field Operations (PFO) training. It’s not going to be all work and no play, though... We have plenty of fun activities lined up so that the students remember their time in Alberta for the rest of their lives!
Welcome to Canada!

Attend the 2009 International Student Energy Summit
As a major Associate Partner of the 2009 International Student Energy Summit, SAIT and the MacPhail School of Energy would like to encourage you to check out the details of this incredible event, which is being held right here in Calgary, Alberta, from June 11-13, 2009 at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre. ISES is a fantastic way to engage in the current discussions surrounding the energy sector worldwide and has been specifically designed by students for students like you.
The International Student Energy Summit (ISES) is a global forum that focuses on sustainable resource management and the role that students will play in defining the future of energy development. ISES is targeting a delegate base of 500 international, multidisciplinary post secondary students in undergraduate and graduate studies interested in energy. This event will create a network of driven individuals just like you who are looking to make a difference in the energy sector. The Summit goals are to:
· Educate students about the current issues in global energy management.
· Inspire students with the knowledge and courage to challenge the current energy system.
· Encourage students to collaborate with the political, grassroots, and corporate communities, to discuss current issues and create alternative solutions and unite likeminded students motivated to lead the world to a sustainable energy future.
The ISES program focuses on three main pillars that address today's key energy issues including Finance, Regulation and Sustainability, Global Energy Cooperation, and Technology & Innovation. Program information and all other details relating to ISES can be accessed through the website at www.studentenergy.org. Registration is currently being offered at the low price of $349 CAD, which includes your delegate fee, all sessions and social events, meals during the Summit, accommodation, and free admission to the GO-EXPO exhibition (a petroleum expo held just prior to ISES).
